Pricing is one of the most difficult parts of running a grooming business — too low and you undervalue your skills and can't cover costs; too high and you price yourself out of a local market. This guide covers the strategic decisions behind a pricing structure that works.
Breed-Based vs Flat Rate Pricing
Flat rates are easy to communicate but penalise you on large, complex, or double-coated breeds. Breed-based pricing charges the right amount for the actual work involved — a Bichon Frise and a Bernese Mountain Dog are not the same groom.
How to Structure Your Service Tiers
Bath and blow-dry — wash, dry, brush out, nail trim
Full groom — bath, dry, clip to breed standard or owner preference, finish
Hand-strip — labour-intensive; price by time, not breed alone
Give clients notice — at least four weeks. Explain briefly (costs have risen; quality hasn't changed). A phased increase for long-term loyal clients softens the impact and reduces churn.
